An Oklahoma bill known as the Firearms Freedom Act has successfully passed the state’s House panel with a whopping 13-0 vote, signifying a great start for the bill that protects Oklahoma citizens from federal laws or regulations concerning guns and ammunition.

oklahoma billAround eight states already have signed into law similar bills defending the Second Amendment rights of the public, and Oklahoma could keep this going strong. If you’ve been following this bill, you may be aware that the ultimate passing of this bill into law can signify some serious change that will surely reverberate throughout the nation and spark similar legislation that may be introduced and adopted in an even greater number of states. Of course the flip side of this is that if this bill is crushed, it will limit the chances of other states following the move successfully. With a vote of 13-0 by the panel, however, it is a good sign for sure.

Right now, a dozen other states are at some stage in the process of ruling on similar bills. The site FireArmsFreedomAct has provided a graphic that highlights the states as of February 9th, 2013:

The bill protects citizens who own any and all firearms, ammunition, and even firearm accessories made in Oklahoma that still reside in the state from federal law, taxation, regulation, or registration. Interstate transactions fall under the authority of the United States Congress. In other words, it stops federal legislation from having any effect in Oklahoma — at least by law.

Now, the bill will move along to the House Calendar Committee in which it will be voted on in the full House in the near future. The Firearm Freedom Act is accompanied by another gun bill in this journey, which also passed the panel on Wednesday. The accompanying bill allows private schools to dictate for themselves as to whether or not teachers and school visitors can carry a firearm on school grounds.

Coming right after the Department of Justice released a memo detailing how an assault weapons ban would not only be highly ineffective in combating crime but downright worthless, the Oklahoma gun freedom bill has gained an extensively amount of support from the growing number of individuals who have crossed beyond the left vs right and debate and realize that the gun debate is not one that has to do with political party affiliations. Instead, it comes down to law-abiding citizens being able to protect themselves from criminals who will always get a hold of banned guns through illegal means.
